Oh those hot dancing Serbian boys...
I went to a Serbian National Folk Ballet presentation at Ryerson theatre with my mom tonight. The poor box office lady was overwhelmed by so many people trying to speak Serbian to her, it was comical.
The dancing/costumes/music was amazing...and at the risk of sounding shallow, the boys were super hot. But see, I'm allowed to say that, I don't have regular contact with boys 'from the old country', lol. If anyone wants to tag along sometime, it'd be awesome.
Just as a sidenote, I have a bunch of Serbian friends who are all like "Serbs..represent" and so on - their rooms are plastered in flags, their emails reflect some random national sentiment and so on. And yet, they don't actually go to any of these concert or dances. Bah! Posers I say!
Highlight of the night: the raffle. There were $500, $1000, and $1500 prizes. The winners of the first two were normal enough, but the lady that won the $1500 never showed up on stage...until the MC started talking. It was the oddest thing..this lady walks up to the stage on the wrong side, and doesn't use the stairs, she just sort of jumps up. She goes up to hug the MC, and starts talking into a microphone....that's not plugged in. She made an entire speech, and she was kind of swaying the entire time. So then, she figures it out, and proceeds to make the whole (now obviously drunken) speech again into the other mic. Yelling VERY loudly, she thanks Kitchener (?!) and - get this - the "Yugoslavian Violins and Orchestra". Everyone was laughing too hard, but I bet she would have gotten a standing ovation.
Oh, and so many odd people take the subway late at night. I need to learn to stop staring...they really take it the wrong way.
